Treating Acne
Acne is a common skin problem especially in teenagers. Acne causes ugly pimples and skin blemishes, often leaving scars when it goes away, marring the face. It is thus a major issue in adolescents that causes loss of confidence and reduced self-esteem.
A variety of treatments are available for acne. These include pills and externally applied creams and gels. The appropriate treatment for acne depends on the severity of acne, which may be mild, moderate or severe. Creams and gels containing benzoyl peroxide are one of the most common methods of acne treatment. However benzoyl peroxide often causes side effects such as skin dryness and irritation, which can be alleviated to a certain extent by using skin moisturizers in conjunction with it. Another common used treatment is the usage of an antibiotic such as tetracycline, either applied externally in the form of a lotion or gel, or consumed as a pill. One of the most effective drugs to treat severe cases of acne is isotretinoin or accutane, a type of retinoid. However it is an expensive and risky method, as side effects ranging from depression and skin dryness to allergy and body pain have rarely been reported.
Once skin is freed of acne using a treatment, acne scars may then be removed using any of the various acne scar removal treatments available such as dermabrasion, chemabrasion, laser resurfacing, subcision, collagen injections, punch techniques and saline injections. A combination of two or more of these techniques may be used as well.
