Advanced Medical Assistant Processes

One of the most misunderstood positions in the healthcare field today is the role of medical assistant. To be fair, the term ‘medical assistant’ itself is a big general and vague but many healthcare providers across the United States of America specifically offer jobs for positions labeled as medical assistants and it is important for both people in these positions as well as potential clients and customers to understand what services are expected. Once it is absolutely clear what comes along with the position of medical assistant and what they exactly are then the entirety of the field of healthcare benefits. The first thing to point out is where they are found: medical assistants can be found in home care agencies, general and private hospitals, companies that provide medical supplies, and even through insurance companies. Because so many colleges and universities that provide adult education focus upon the healthcare field, it is also not uncommon to find some of them in medical assistant school as well.

There are two general classifications of the duties of a medical assistant which are either clinical or administrative. The clinical duties are what most people think of when they think of medical assistants such as administering injections, prepping instruments and patients, and assisting in CPR and lab procedures. The administrative side of what a medical assistant does includes charting a patient’s progress, billing, working with medical records, and filling out insurance forms. This is where some of the confusion over what medical assistants actually do comes from because some people erroneously believe their duties are encompassed in the clinical aspect. Ironically, the administrative side of what professional medical assistants do takes up the majority of their time when compared to the clinical aspect. When it is understood what medical assistants are and what is expected from their duties and processes it helps the entirety of the healthcare field as a whole.
