The level of health care provided to prisoners may not be the best in the world, but for uninsured Americans it beats a blank. One man living in North Carolina says that he robbed a bank for the least amount of money possible in order to be seen be a doctor. Richard James Veron doesn’t not believe that he has any serious illnesses, however, because he has no insurance he has not been able to get the pain medical that he needs for the ruptured discs in his back, and he has begun to worry about the undiagnosed lumps that are growing on his chest. In a desperate attempt to get seen by a medical professional, Veron robbed a RBC Bank bank teller for the sum of $1.
Because Veron had no weapon at the time of the crime, and also because he only got away with a nominal sum of money, he won’t be spending a considerable amount of time in jail. Other Americans living with diseases have stooped to similar levels. Without medical insurance, US citizens are required to pay for their doctors visit and hospital care. Eventually, these health care facilities will demand payments before they will see these patients again. When the money runs out, the medical care ends.
Veron might not be alone, but there are social services in place to help the poor and indigent get medical assistance. It is not known if Veron was employed when he committed the crime, but he will be able to get himself checked out at the infirmary of the jail that he is imprisoned in.
